In an interview with EW, Elliot Page reveals the process of returning to theaters and the comfort of acting in a character
Elliot Page hasn’t appeared in a feature film in six years, and his big return to theaters reintroduces the actor after his gender transition – and the impact doesn’t go unnoticed.
In Close To You (2023), which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, Page He appears in the first scene shirtless, getting out of bed, peering through his bedroom window and getting dressed before going downstairs to make a cup of tea. In an interview with EntertainmentWeeklythe actor talks about the relevance of the film in his career.
“[…] The moment you’re doing it, you’re doing it from an instinctual place that I don’t know how to describe. It just happens, but at the same time it felt natural,” he said. Page to EW. “Showing that you are comfortable and present and waking up in your body, that means a lot to me. I never thought I would feel this way, so it feels good to be able to act like this.”
As if the debut of Elliot Page On the big screen, the actor also talks about his experience of improvising in the 100 minutes of the film, 53 minutes of which were in one take. The script had no dialogue, so all the lines came according to Elliot Page’s emotion and intention in the recordings.
“The way I feel working now is much more embodied coming from that base, than coming in and not feeling like that. It’s a big change. Doing something like this, a complete improvisation, before, would have been almost impossible,” Page explains. “The feeling of being able to do this and feeling present enough to do it, I felt excited every day. Directed by Dominic Savage, Close to You tells the story of Sam (ElliotPage), a trans man who reconnects with an old flame (Hillary Baack) while traveling to suburban Canada to reunite with family for the first time in four years after transitioning.
