Taylor Swift made history on Tuesday night (9/12) on stage at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey (USA), when she took home nine Moon Man, also known as Silver Astronaut, trophies at MTV’s major awards show, the 2023 Video Music Awards.
She already had 14 astronauts on her shelf and with the new statuettes she has reached 23, surpassing Madonna with 20 and second only to Beyoncé with 26 – including the 2014 Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement Award. Taylor’s new trophies were Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Video, Best Direction and Best Summer Entertainment. Additionally, her video “Anti-Hero” also won the award for Best Cinematography. and the best visual effects, delivered to your team members.
The number of trophies won by the singer in a single evening set a new record at the VMAs, surpassing the eight victories of Lady Gaga in 2010 and Beyoncé in 2016.
Taylor’s record-breaking night came after she also made history last year, becoming the first artist to win Video of the Year three times (to further celebrate the occasion, it was at this point that Swift decided to announce his hit album Midnights). Swift won her first VMA Video of the Year in 2015 for “Bad Blood,” her second in 2019 for “You Need to Calm Down” and last year for “All Too Well: The Short Film.” She is now the only artist to have won MTV’s main trophy four times.
Anitta and other highlights
The awards also recognized Anitta, winner for the second consecutive year in the Best Latin Video category for “Funk Rave”. Other highlights included the hot collaboration between Karol G & Shakira, the rock of Måneskin, the rap of Nicki Minaj, the R&B of SZA and the K-pop of BLACKPINK, TXT, Jungkook and Stray Kids.
Numerous rap, rock, K-pop and Brazilian funk performances also took place at the event. Highlights included an old-school rap show (Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, LL Cool J and Run-DMC) celebrating 50 years of hip-hop, performances by Shakira and Diddy, honored for their careers, the new partnership between Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, the infernal performance of Doja Cat, Karol G with the funk remix “Tá OK” and Anitta in double dose, with a medley of “Funk Rave”, “Casi Casi” and “Used To Be,” and a performance with South Korean group Tomorrow x Together, better known as TXT.
