One Piece on Netflix: You’ll never guess where Alvida’s pink pirate ship came from

It’s only one step from Captain Flint to Luffy. Or rather a ship. The design team behind Netflix’s One Piece series did a phenomenal job bringing Eiichiro Oda’s designs to life. In addition to the Baratie and Vogue Merry, two must-haves in the first season, they also had to recreate other ships: Vice Admiral Garp’s or even Alvida’s ships.

The fearsome pirate, played by Ilia Izoreli’s Paulino, who drives Kobe and his crew crazy, has the peculiarity of being quite self-centered. Her flag is a heart and her boat is pink…as is her outfit. Instead of starting from scratch, the teams reused sequences from the Black Sails series they worked on between 2014 and 2017. Directed by Toby Stephens, it chronicled the adventures of the legendary Captain Flint and his men.

One Piece is a lot weirder and crazier than Black Sails, but we design the sets in the same way. These are also scenes shot on water…all things that the teams already know how to do.”We can read in the press kit sent by Netflix.

Man O’ War image on the right

It was the Spanish boat A Man O’ War that was chosen and painted pink to become Alvida’s Miss Love Duck one piece. The first one took 3 months of work and 50 people to build it in full scale. To reflect the image of its owner and to be as faithful as possible to Oda’s paintings, the teams custom made a giant duck head (in pink, of course) and then added wings to the side. You can see the result in the video below (from 45 seconds):

Unfortunately, there is little chance that Alvida and her boat will appear in One Piece Season 2, officially ordered, as her character is not important at the moment (and the writers have to make cuts).
