Fight Club: China changes the film’s ending – and Chuck Palahniuk approves version: ‘They brought the film back to the book’

The film Fight Club (1999) gained great repercussion on social media after China made an edited version of the feature film available on the streaming service Tencent Video. Many users criticized the cut, but the author of the original book praised the new version. (Via The Guardian)

In the film David Fincherreleased in 1999, the protagonists come up with a plan to end consumerism and, in the end, observe its execution, which involves blowing up buildings in the region.

In the version released by China, the explosion does not happen. An on-screen message warns: “Using the clue provided by Tyler, the police quickly discovered the entire plan and arrested all the criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding. After the trial, Tyler he was sent to a lunatic asylum receiving psychological treatment. He was discharged from the hospital in 2012.”

Chuck Palahniukbook author Fight Club (1996), believes that the new version is closer to the original work. “This is super wonderful! Everyone has a happy ending in China!,” he wrote on Twitter.

Later, he told the TMZ: “The irony is that… they lined up the ending almost exactly with the ending of the book, as opposed to the ending of Fincher, which was the most spectacular visual ending. So, in a way, the Chinese brought the film back to the book a little bit.”

Furthermore, Palahniuk questioned why China’s changes bothered the public, when the United States also changed the original narrative for cinemas – and, according to the writer, other countries edited the book’s ending without permission.

“What I find really interesting is that my books are heavily banned in the US. The Texas prison system refuses to carry my books in their libraries. Many public schools and most private schools refuse to have my books. But is it only a problem when China changes the ending of a film? I have put up with book bans for a long time.”
