“One of the best movies of the year”? American critics are excited about the new sci-fi movie Rogue One from the director of Star Wars

It left us with the impressive rage of Darth Vader and Princess Leia, whose digital rejuvenation was definitely not the best effect of the film. Seven years after the release of Rogue One, which he didn’t finish himself (because it was massively shot by Tony Gilroy), Gareth Edwards left the galaxy far from Star Wars to return to Earth.

But it does not leave science fiction. And, for the purposes of his fourth feature, The Creator, he sees a post-apocalyptic future and an Earth where artificial intelligence has become a major issue and source of tension.

As with the Star Wars saga, it’s as much about SF as it is about war. And the creator hero, played by John David Washington, must enter enemy territory to prevent artificial intelligence from ending humanity. He does not know what awaits him in this adventure.

The return of Gareth Edwards, if early reviews on Twitter (or X) across the Atlantic are to be believed. Even if the narrative and emotion were decidedly less compelling than the visual aspect.

(“The Creator is unbelievably good. The best movie of the year and the best sci-fi movie of all time, in my opinion. Gareth Edwards lives up to expectations in a truly impressive way with a visceral, moving and creative story of humanity. I really enjoyed it. You have to see it.”)

(“The Creator is a masterpiece and one of the best films of the year. It hits on so many levels, given that AI is such a hot topic. Gareth Edwards does a great job of engaging the public at every stage of engagement. Journey. We need to talk Madeleine Yuna Voyles for the Oscars.”)

(“The Creator is a master piece of original science fiction. Gareth Edwards is one of our greatest directors. A moving and nuanced reflection, à la LucasAbout human prejudices and prejudices and our vulnerability to something greater. Display and heart at the highest level. Pure cinema, baby!”

“John David Washington continues to be a true star, but I was really blown away by Madeleine Yuna Voyles. She and John David Washington have a natural, heartfelt dynamic, and Madeleine’s performance is beyond her years. What a find! Someone who gives the creator such pure emotional heart.”)

A brutal, intense and ambitious sci-fi war era with a heavy emphasis on the war element

(“The Creator is a brutal, intense and ambitious sci-fi war epic with a heavy emphasis on the war element. It’s absolutely stunning and Gareth Edwards-esque visuals. John David Washington and Madeleine Yuna Voyles would be great together in this unique take on the lone wolf and child trope.” )

(“The Creator is a sci-fi delight, bold and fun. It has a compelling story, its visuals are beautiful, its themes resonate, and its action is epic. My main concern is that it didn’t make me cry. It tries. A lot. A slight lack of connection that hinders preventing it from “barely” reaching perfection. But only “barely”.)

I felt like I had a fair amount of investment in the finished piece, but it feels rushed and convoluted compared to the original.

Oren Soffer. The film gives us stunning image after stunning image.”

“Story-wise, the first two acts are excellent. Intense, gripping, and full of emotion. I felt invested enough to make the ending work, but it feels rushed and convoluted compared to the beginning. The AI is getting close, the movie does well when it’s presented as ‘the other,’ but Given how much concern there is now about this issue, I’d like it to be more relevant to current discussions.”)

(“Gareth Edwards does not miss the creator. The film is placed on the side Terminator 2, alien and Star Wars as an example of how science fiction can reflect our world. Among the best films of the year, easy.”)

Visit French cinemas from September 27 to discover the film and have your say.
