Amazon.com on Wednesday unveiled a slew of new devices and updated its Alexa voice assistant with generative artificial intelligence to attract users as competition from chatbots grows.
Alexa will speak more naturally next year, shedding its nearly decade-old robotic tone, and will answer questions like football game start times and recipe ideas. She will also be able to compose and recite poetry, according to Amazon’s demonstration at the company’s annual product launch.
Amazon launched Alexa in 2014 but hasn’t found a consistent way to make it profitable beyond directing users to the company’s website to make more purchases.
The company has been trying to improve Alexa, especially after OpenAI’s ChatGPT hit the scene last November with long answers to complex questions. Similar chatbots have sparked an investor frenzy in generative AI startups.
During the event, Amazon also introduced updated versions of its Fire tablets for kids, Show (an Echo speaker with a screen), a speaker for televisions, and new search capabilities within the FireTV service to find free content.
