‘The Sound of Freedom’: Controversial Film Releases This Thursday

The film “The Sound of Freedom”, based on a true story about human trafficking, will be released on Brazilian screens this Thursday (21). In the United States, the film premiered on July 4, and its revenues are close to those of other 2023 blockbusters, for example: “Oppenheimer”, “Barbie” and “Mission: Impossible 7”.

The film follows former US government special agent Tim Ballard (Jim Caviezel), who embarks on a mission to rescue child victims of child trafficking. In Colombia, Ballard decides to leave his government position to “take the law into his own hands”.

Directed by Alejandro Monteverde (Little Boy), the film also stars Mira Sorvino (American Crime Story), Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit) and Kurt Fuller (Psych).

Controversies over “Sound of Freedom”.

At first, the production may seem like a “normal” action and detective film. But it is surrounded by controversy, which has emerged over the past five years.

For starters, the film is accused of serving as a propaganda vehicle for QAnon, a movement that believes liberal Satanists control the U.S. government and that sex traffickers working for Democrats are kidnapping children around the world.

But how did we get to this point? It was like this:

The other part of the controversy over “Sound of Freedom” concerns its box office in the United States. Angel Studios’ distribution featured “pay for others,” where people or institutions can purchase tickets for a donation.

That led to accusations that the thousands of tickets purchased by churches and businesses inflated the box office, which surpassed the openings of blockbusters such as “Indiana Jones and the Gifts of Destiny” and “Mission: Impossible – Reckoning Part One.”

Never in a million years would I have imagined this [o filme] it would be so politicized. I saw a report [sobre tráfico de crianças] in the media and I always thought it would be a film that would bring us all together.

Alejandro Monteverde, director of “Sound of Freedom”, in an interview with the magazine Vanity Fair
