Guillermo del Toro was almost responsible for directing a spin-off of one of the most famous franchises in the world. The Mexican director confirmed that he was hired for a short time to direct a film about Jabba the Hutt, a character from the Star Wars series.

Jabba the Hutt was one of the most powerful gangsters in the galaxy, with far-reaching influence in both politics and the criminal underworld. There were no second chances with Jabba, something Han Solo would discover, though the slug-like alien would eventually fall victim to his own arrogance and vindictive ways.

Even with part of the project underway, Lucasfilm has chosen to follow a different direction, investing in other productions derived from the Star Wars atmosphere, such as Rogue One AND Earth. To date, the reason for shelving the Jabba the Hutt film has not been revealed.
