Gil equals season best since returning to Corinthians; watch

Defender Gil has equaled Corinthians’ season scoring record since his return to the club in the second half of 2019. The defender was the scorer of the winning goal against Botafogo last Friday at the Neo Química Arena.

Gil has four goals for Timão in 2023, matching the 2020 season, when he reached that mark in 55 games. Adding the two periods together, his best goal-scoring year was 2014, when he scored five goals.

After the match against Glorioso, the defender spoke about the criticism he had suffered throughout the season and the “revolt” he gave, with good performances and important goals.

“The most important thing is that, despite all the criticism, you have never seen me say that I want to leave the club, that I am in the DM, that I don’t want to play. I am man enough to know the club I play for, what I represent, not only for the fans, but also for my family. Everyone knows my commitment. Criticism is part of football, but when it comes to personal criticism it becomes more complicated. But we know how it works and I continue to work the same way” , commented Gil in contact with journalists, after the victory against Botafogo.

“I’m happy for the goal, for having contributed. The most important thing is to achieve the victory, we worked, we spoke after the match against Grêmio. The goal helps, but the victory gives us a better condition to work. On Tuesday we will have a important match”, concluded the defender.

At the moment, Gil is an absolute starter for Corinthians together with Lucas Veríssimo. The number 4 has played 47 games this season, also with three assists.

Adding together his two experiences at Timão, the defender played 430 games, of which 421 as a starter. Beque won Campeonato Paulista (2013), Recopa (2013) and Campeonato Brasileiro (2015) in his first stint.

The trend is for Gil to start playing against Fortaleza, this Tuesday, in the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericano. The ball rolls at 9.30pm (Brasilia time), at the Neo Química Arena.
