Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and more cast and crew members weighed in on the possibility of a third (and final) film
The cast of Mamma Mia! is one call away from returning for a sequel to the film adaptation of the musical play of the same name, written by Benny Andersson It is Bjorn Ulvaeus. Both the film and the musical were based on the songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA.
Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and more cast and crew members spoke with Vogue to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 2008 musical film. The interviews were carried out before the actors and screenwriters strike in Hollywood.
One of the most beloved musicals by the public, Mamma Mia! (2008) revolves around Donna (Meryl Streep), owner of a hotel on the Greek islands, preparing her daughter’s wedding with the help of two friends. Meanwhile, bride Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) invites three of his mother’s ex-boyfriends in hopes of meeting his real father.
See below what each member of the cast and technical production of Mamma Mia! says about a third film:
The producer Judy Craymer:
There has to be another one because people want it. The problem is that we are all getting older. But we couldn’t be in a better position when it comes to having a cast eager to get it done.. I think we have to bring closure to these characters. All their odysseys lead them back to the island, because that’s where everyone wants to be in their old age.
Amanda Seyfriedwho played Sophie:
I dare you to show me a person who doesn’t want a third party Mamma Mia! ”
Meryl Streepwho played Donna Sheridan:
If there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there. I’m ready for anything. […] I said to Judy [Cramer, produtora do filme] that if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna [que faleceu no segundo filme], I like that. Or it could be like one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals that it was actually his twin sister who died.“
Colin Firthwho played Harry Bright:
I would be there for all the reasons I gave… the joys of making the first two films. There just needs to be an idea good enough to bring us together. It doesn’t have to be a good idea in any lofty sense, but it just has to be a good enough script to give us another chance
Pierce Brosnamwho played Sam Carmichael
Judy [Cramer, produtora do filme]You know where to find me if you want a third try. I think everyone would feel the same if she said, ‘I have a story, I have the script.’ We would all do it in a heartbeat.“
Stellan Skarsgårdwho played Bill Anderson
I doubt any of us will avoid doing another one. It’s just a matter of finding enough songs to create a new story. I’ll be at a ballot box when there’s the script for Mamma Mia 3 but I will gladly participate as a pile of ashes [risos]”.
