Before dueling in the semifinals of the Libertadores in the next few days, Fluminense and Internacional had already met in the round of 16 of the continental competition eleven years ago
Fluminense and Internacional will face each other this Wednesday (27th), at 9.30pm, at the Maracanã, in the first match of the Libertadores semi-finals. However, it is not the first time that Tricolor and Colorado have met in the direct elimination phase of the continental competition. In 2012, both faced each other in that year’s round of 16, with Tricolor winning. Don’t remember what the games were like? OR Export News World help you with this!
In that year’s Libertadores, Fluminense and Inter ranked 1st and 2nd respectively in their respective groups. The Tricolore ended the phase almost unbeaten. There were five victories and only one defeat. Colorado narrowly missed elimination, remaining just one point out of third place.
In the round of 16 the draw put both teams face to face. The first leg was a goalless draw at Beira-Rio. The duel was quite even, but it was Inter who came close to winning, being awarded a missed penalty by the Argentinian Dátolo, stopped in the defense of Diego Cavalieri, as well as a ball that hit the post at the end of the match.
In the return leg, at the Nilton Santos Stadium, Fluminense prevailed, but with a hint of emotion. Leandro Damião opened the scoring for the Gauchos right at the start of the match, but shortly after Leandro Euzébio tried to equalize the match. At the end of the first half, the idol Fred overturns the result in favor of the Tricolor.
Inter put pressure on their opponents in the second half, having four attackers on the pitch (Leandro Damião, Dagoberto, Jajá and Jô), but the Rio Grande do Sul club failed to score the goal that would give them a place.
