Dino’s number 2 criticizes ‘societal and identity pressures’ in the choice of the STF and the PGR

The executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Ricardo Cappelli, criticized “societal and identity pressures” for the choice of the new minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), who will fill the vacant post of Rosa Weber, and of the new attorney general of the Republic, who will succeed Augusto Aras. In social media on Tuesday 26, Cappelli said that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is doing a “great service to the country” by rejecting attacks from sectors of society.

The president was pressured to nominate women and people of color for the STF seat by PT groups, part of the militancy and affirmative movements. Flávio Dino, Minister of Justice, is one of the candidates for the vacant position on the Supreme Court.

Lula will also define the command of the PGR. Doubts still remain whether the president will nominate a name from the triple list drawn up by the National Association of Public Prosecutors (ANPR). In March the PT MP declared that this is no longer a criterion. The position should be occupied on an interim basis by Deputy Attorney General Elizeta Maria de Paiva Ramos starting from Wednesday 27th.

“Who appoints the Attorney General of the Republic? Who appoints the STF? The people, through their elected representative. President Lula does another great service to the country by rejecting corporate and identity pressures in the name of the highest national interest,” he said X (formerly Twitter).

On Monday 25th, Lula clarified that gender and color will not be the criteria for indicating the name of the vacant position in the STF. The president stated that he intends to choose someone who can “satisfy the interests and expectations of Brazil” and who “votes appropriately without having to vote through the press.”

“There is no need to ask this question about gender or color. I have already been through it all. At the right time you will know who I will appoint. I intend to appoint the most right person who I know will be the person I have the most faith in and who will be a great person in the Supreme Court, which is what Brazil needs,” he said.

According to the president, the announcements of the new Attorney General of the Republic and the new STF minister will be made “at the right time”.
