The new installment of the saga wanted to pay tribute to two key characters from the original ‘Jurassic Park’ movie
The new installment of the ‘Jurassic World’ saga is a constant trip to nostalgia. This is how our partner recognizes it Faust Fernandez in his review of ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’, stating that “The movie critic, supposedly as objective (and honest) as he theoretically should be, might not have a hard time putting up the headline I don’t like ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’, its hasty succession of sequences that go nowhere (except to the repeat the already mythical moments of the Spielbergian ‘Jurassic Park‘) and that they want us to believe that it is a script”.
The return of the original cast of ‘Jurassic Park’, 29 years later, and the scenes that ‘Jurassic World 3’ copies directly from the 1993 film go beyond the limits of homage, bordering even those of plagiarism at times, but within those winks and (including even ‘Jurassic World 3’ connections to starwars, Indiana Jones and Marvel) have left room to pay tribute and remember two characters who have not been able to return to the franchise.
SPOILERS FOR ‘JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION’ FOLLOW
The first of them is John Hammondthe original founder of the first Jurassic Park, who is mentioned several times throughout the film. Richard Attenboroughthe actor who played him, died in 2014 and already in the first ‘Jurassic World’ he was honored with a golden statue that ruled the theme park.
But the most obvious tribute is to Dennis NedryWayne Knightkey to the villain of this new installment. In ‘Jurassic Park’, Nedry is hired by Lewis Dogson to betray Hammond and steal cryogenic embryos of all the dinosaurs from ‘Jurassic World’ inside a can of shaving cream. That spray, from the ‘Barbasol’ brand (curious to say the least), does not reach its destination since Nedry, while trying to flee the park, crashes his car and is attacked by a dilophosaurus, a dinosaur that blinds him by throwing poison at him and then gobbles him up.
Lewis Dogson returns to be the antagonist of ‘Jurassic World 3’, and he does it with Barbasol’s boat and his company, BioSyn, ruling the world economy. How the shaving foam spray got into his possession is anyone’s guess, as until now the only clues we had to its whereabouts were in the video game.’Jurassic Park: The Game‘, which focused its argument on a rescue team fighting for control of such valuable merchandise after finding it on Isla Nublar.
In the video game, the boat was totally destroyed under the claws of the T-Rex, so we’re assuming the movies don’t consider it canon within their universe. The point is that Dogson managed to get hold of him, somehow, and continues to tinker with genetics with dire results. He has also hired as a computer scientist a “clone” of Dennis Nedry himself, played by Caleb Hearonwho appears in an undisguised homage to the original character.
Dogson’s death at the end of the film is one of the scenes that ‘Jurassic World 3’ has copied from ‘Jurassic Park’, and in this case it is another tribute to Nedry. Dogson dies exactly like the fat computer scientist, with his vehicle stopped and at the hands of a herd of dilophosaurus that use their poison against him and end up devouring him, Once again, Barbasol’s boat was abandoned to its fate.
