End of an era: Netflix ships its latest DVD today

Netflix began in the late 1990s as an online store that sent DVD movies to customers’ homes. The company has announced that the service will end this Friday (29th) with the sending of the last unit in the traditional red envelope.

The news marks the end of an important era, as DVD rentals began the platform’s journey to becoming a giant in the streaming industry.

“Netflix will ship its latest DVD on September 29, 2023 (…) the red envelope continues to be an enduring symbol of our love for entertainment,” says a Netflix post published on X (formerly Twitter).

It is worth mentioning that the end of the DVD rental business was announced in April this year. According to the company, demand for physical rental was decreasing.

Netflix DVD Rental Business

Although it is truly the end of an era, Netflix announced some good news in August for purists and fans of films on physical media. Those who rented the DVDs can keep the discs and receive an additional 10 films delivered to their home in the USA. A way found by the company to empty stocks.
