Tonight on TV: This is one of the big losers at the 2023 Oscars, as well as one of the most surprising films of 2022

Almost fifteen years after director Martin McDonagh brought actors Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell to the screen in The Banshees of Inishrein in Good Kisses from Bruges.

The story of the film takes place in 1923, when the Irish Civil War is coming to an end. On Insherin – a remote island off the west coast of Ireland – two lifelong friends, Padraic and Colm, find themselves at an impasse when Colm decides to end their friendship overnight. Stunned, Padraic disagrees with the situation and tries his best to put the pieces back together. But his repeated attempts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve, and when Colm finally issues a desperate ultimatum, events escalate with dire consequences.

Magnified by the rugged beauty of the scenery (filming took place on the islands of Inishmore and Achill, off the west coast of Ireland) and superbly executed, Banshees of Inisherin is one of the event movies of 2022. Indeed, it is almost unclassifiable – funny, tragic, pathetic and tender at the same time. With a deep sense of absurdity and mockery, Martin McDonagh explores human nature and the need to learn to live together or risk descending into destructive madness.

With nine Oscar nominations, most notably for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, Banshees of Inisherin is one of the big losers of this ceremony because he leaves empty-handed (the big winner tonight is everything everywhere at once). On the other hand, Banshees of Inisherin Wins BAFTA for Best British Film.
