The actors’ strike isn’t even over, and Netflix may already have a new strategy in mind to offset the impact on the company’s revenue. According to information from the Wall Street Journal, streaming plans to increase the price of its ad-free service as soon as SAG-AFTRA (the actors’ union) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents studios, stipulate a deal.
The Actors Guild joined the writers’ strike in July, making the strike Hollywood’s largest union demonstration since 1960.
The Writers Guild of America, a union for screenwriters, and AMPTP reached a provisional agreement last Wednesday (27), putting an end to the 146-day conflict.
In the case of SAG-AFTRA, which is still on strike, a negotiation meeting is scheduled for Wednesday (4). If the acting class and AMPTP reach an agreement, the Hollywood general strike could officially end.
Netflix and prices
This isn’t the first time, of course, that Netflix plans to change prices, and in a short period of time. In February this year, in a strategy bucking industry trends, the platform reduced prices in more than 30 countries – at the same time it implemented new rules for sharing passwords, which came with an additional fee. According to the company, the measures were necessary due to strong competition in the streaming market.
However, the company’s real plan at the time was to increase prices to generate more revenue, as revealed in its financial results. The arrival of a new value for ad-free plans may therefore just be the completion of your initial project.
