It was October 3 in the movie “Mean Girls” (2004) when heartthrob Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett) asked Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) what day it was. “October 3,” Cady replied, smiling. Due to the film’s success over the years, the date has become a milestone. And, to celebrate, Paramount Pictures has created an official TikTok account where you can watch the entire film for free, in 23 parts.
For those in a hurry:
The idea emulates a popular method of streaming piracy on platforms like TikTok, Twitter and YouTube, used to bypass restrictions on the length of uploaded videos and avoid being flagged by copyright detection software. Now the bad news for Brazilian fans: on TikTok you can only watch the film in English.
@bad Girls It’s October 3rd. #MeanGirlsDay
Paramount even labeled each part so you can keep track of where it is. But if you prefer to watch “Mean Girls” in its entirety, the film is also available for streaming on Paramount+, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Some studios have already released entire episodes of their series on YouTube and possibly on X (formerly Twitter), now that longer videos can be uploaded to the platform. Overall, the idea is to attract potential subscribers to the streaming service where the series is usually hosted.
Films on TikTok
Some clever users have found a way around copyright laws to post full movies on TikTok.
Instead of posting a, say, two-hour video of a complete film, users cut productions into clips of up to three minutes and then share them on social media.
Therefore, many people find posts like “Part 9” (without any information beyond that) on TikTok’s “For You” page. It seems strange at one point, but in reality it is only one of dozens or even hundreds of pieces that together form a complete film.
Hollywood lawyers and law professors told the Wall Street Journal that the practice also represents copyright infringement. Even trying to hide the full names of the films isn’t enough to change the situation, experts say.
On the other hand, it’s not like these people profit from other people’s work: most posts are not monetized.
