Tom Hardy was ‘weird’ and ‘challenging’ on set, says Patrick Stewart

In memoir, veteran actor recalls ‘difficult’ experience with Tom Hardy on film set

Patrick Stewart is a personality on and off screen: in addition to his iconic roles as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Xavier in X-Menthe actor is also a well-known good guy, owner of famous friendships, such as his relationship with Ian McKellen, for example. For this reason, he drew attention when he described a colleague who he found particularly strange behind the scenes: Tom Hardy.

Hardy, who acted with Stewart in Star Trek: Nemesis, is remembered by Stewart as a “weird” and “challenging” presence. In his memoir, Making It Sothe veteran actor describes the young talent, who played the villain Shinzon in Nemesisas a solitary presence, who did not socialize with his colleagues on set.

This is a very particular passage from the memories of Stewart, who played Picard for decades in different productions. In the book, he admits that the 2002 film ended up having a ‘weak’ result – and specifically comments on Hardy’s behavior behind the scenes (via Far Out):

“The actor who played the villain, Shinzon, was a strange, lonely young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy.”

The book then focuses on a series of memories of the artist in relation to his colleague, describing him as a person who didn’t care much about social interactions with the cast:

“Tom didn’t engage with any of us socially. He never said good morning, he never said good night, and he spent the hours he wasn’t performing in his trailer with his girlfriend.”

Stewart also remembers Tom at the end of filming, when he left without celebrating or saying goodbye to anyone: “When Tom finished his participation, he left, as usual, without ceremony or greetings, he simply walked out the door.”

The memories, however, in no way point to Hardy’s stardom or any kind of rudeness. “He wasn’t hostile in any way – it was just difficult to establish any relationship with him.”

Given Hardy’s behavior, Stewart still remembers being positively surprised by the young talent’s subsequent success:

“When we wrapped up, I thought, ‘Here’s someone we’ll never hear from again’. And I’m totally pleased that Tom proved me wrong.”
