Reservoir Dogs: By the way, what does this title mean?

In 1992, someone named Quentin Tarantino caused a sensation in the world cinematic landscape by opening a reservoir of dogs. The first feature film to follow six robbers who have codenames and whose jewelry store robbery failed … Before this classic gangster movie airs on Arte this Monday evening, we look at its mysterious name. What do reservoir dogs mean?

Reservoir dogs earned critical acclaim after appearing in cinemas and immediately enjoyed cult status. But it’s hard to understand what the title means! What has the film got to do with it? What message did Tarantino want to convey? We know that the latter production company A Band Apart was named after Jean-Luc Godard’s Bande à Part, so we are looking … and we find three specific hypotheses.

The most common is that Tarantino, a fan of the movie Goodbye Louis Malle’s Children, found it terribly difficult to pronounce his title correctly. Thus, the American filmmaker decided to associate the word “reservoir” (as he pronounced “goodbye”) with Sam Pekingpah straw dogs, a version that was more or less confirmed by his colleague from the Roger Avar era.

Another track that is still related to Goodbye Children. When QT worked in a video club, he recommended unfamiliar films, including (always) the classic Louis Malle. One day a client heard something else and replied: “I do not want to see the dogs in the reservoir”. Finally, the last option, the title Reservoir Dogs will be a reference to one of the scenes in Brian de Palma’s movie Body Double, in which a dog falls into a pond.
