The reactions to the new The Exorcist are surprising, but not in a good way; I wait

The Exorcist: The Devoted, a reboot of the 1973 horror classic, arrived in US cinemas this Friday (6) and, as usual, media reactions were under embargo until the film’s release. Apparently, however, they didn’t like the new sequel, making the mistake of trying to repeat the “recipe” of the original.

Check out excerpts from the international review below:

Though it tries admirably, The Exorcist: The Devoted is nowhere near as deeply scary as William Friedkin’s genre-defining film.

Brian Truitt, USA Today.

The Exorcist: The Devoted is a pale reproduction, grafting the franchise’s iconography onto a slick, uninspired production without a compelling reason for its existence or anything of value to say.

Matt Oakes, Silver Screen.

The Exorcist: The Devoted fails to capture an ounce of the terror and emotional weight of the late William Friedkin’s original.

Belen Edwards, Mashable.

The Exorcist: The Devoted is a more conventional horror tale, with constant terror and mysterious thrills – it’s definitely scary, but lacks the excitement of the first film.

Brian Truitt, USA Today.

How awful can a movie be when its purpose is to deliver, in the nick of time, all the details that decades of films about demonic possession have taught us to expect? The devil can take many forms, but perhaps we can all agree that he should never happen again.

Owen Gleiberman, Variety

A film that was shaping up to be a smart and respectful homage to The Exorcist descends into the depths of a cheap copy and straight to streaming.

Nicholas Barber, BBC.com.

For some fans of horror productions (like me), the negative reception of the sequel is not a surprise, since the sequels of films of the genre generally have a mediocre performance precisely because they always try to repeat the “recipe” of the previous work , making the plot stale and devoid of surprises, or completely disconnecting the essence of the story in an attempt to extract its full potential, taking it down other paths that tend to undermine the emotion – not always, but it happens.

Himself The Exorcist II – The Hereticfrom 1977, it didn’t have the charm of the original, while The exorcist reached a box office of over $440 million, the sequel grossed $30 million. Probably alone among all the sequels and adaptations based on the franchise The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) may have gained some popularity and compensatory revenue.

The Exorcist is the highest-grossing horror film

The point is simply to take the risk of trying to reinvent yourself The exorcist, it is courage and responsibility. The film is the highest-grossing horror film of all time, receiving 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

The Exorcist: The Devoted follows the story of Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.), the father of a child possessed by a demonic entity. Desperate, the protagonist asks for help from Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), who many years earlier had fought for the soul of her daughter Regan (Linda Blair).
