A little guilty pleasure of the 2000s, David Slade and Josh Hartnett and Melissa George’s horror film 30 Days of Night was released in January 2008, just months before the TV series True Blood gave vampires new life. .
Before vampires were transformed into seductive and disturbing individuals in Alan Ball’s series, some of them were truly terrifying. And there’s no doubt that 30 Days of Night’s blood-sucking creatures that found their way into a small Alaskan town during a month-long polar night (convenient…!), are nothing short of charming and clever.
After the first night of total darkness, more than half the population of the small town of Barrow is slaughtered by these vampires, and those who survive must find a way to avoid the creatures for the next 29 days… there comes Josh Harnett. A savior, fully into his character and holding nothing back in the face of these odious vampires.
If we don’t shy away from the fun, it’s a bit of a surprise to see someone who promised to be a rising star in Hollywood at the time being cast in this well-made B-series, but which really doesn’t fit. his build.
Still, this horror flick reminds viewers that there’s always something to be afraid of when it comes to creatures of the night… old fashioned, but still effective. As for the costume and make-up team, they tried to ensure that these special creatures would scare the audience forever.
Steve Niles, creator of the original graphic novel and screenwriter of the film, explains: “We wanted to recreate the full horror potential of vampires, to show them as terrifying, cruel and wild creatures for whom humans are nothing more than food. By exploring this concept in his drawings, Ben gave the comic an eerie aesthetic.“
And director David Slade adds:I just wanted to change the faces of the vampires a bit, break the lines to make them less human, but still as realistic. They are human enough that we can recognize them, but they are still quite different from you and me!“
30 Days of Night leaves the Netflix catalog on October 18.
