The University’s academic activities have been suspended since the 20th of last month
The students of University of Sao Paulo (USP) They decided, in the general assembly on the night of Wednesday 11th, to remain in the strike which has paralyzed the academic activities of the institution since the 20th of last month.
Even with the teachers’ exit from the movement, and with some faculties and institutes having separately decided to return to the classroom, the students who participated in this Wednesday’s general assembly, held in the spaces of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH), in La Cidade Universitária, western area of the capital São Paulo, has formed a majority to continue with crossed arms.
With the decision, the strike will last until next Wednesday, the 18th, when a new general assembly will be convened to define the future of the strike. It is expected to be held at the Polytechnic School (Poli) building, where the University’s engineering courses are held.
The protesters believe that the proposals presented by the rectorate last Tuesday, the 10th, do not address the issues raised by university students. However, unlike last Monday’s assembly, the 9th, in which the continuation of the strike was accepted by a large majority, the atmosphere of this Wednesday’s assembly was more divided, with students defending the continuity of the strike and the students who expressed their desire for the strike to end. the movement. .
Among the commitments presented by the rectory are the hiring of 1,027 teachers, the increase in the number of permanency scholarships for low-income students, the guarantee that USP will not close any courses due to lack of teachers, the construction of a nursery on the USP Leste campus, as well as the promise that no protester will suffer retaliation for participating in the strike.
Despite this, some university students did not feel supported by the proposals. According to them, what has been presented does not yet guarantee the students’ permanence at university because the scholarships will not be readjusted, and they understand that the rector has not adopted ways to guarantee greater inclusion of indigenous and trans students, as well as black students. , brown and mixed race teachers of the original peoples.
Defenders of ending the strike argue that the measures presented by the rectory are progress and say the movement has lost strength with the departure of classes. They also fear that the rectory will return to the agenda already guaranteed with the extension of the strike.
Courses such as Architecture, Biology, Psychology, Literature and Social Sciences, among others, have decided to continue the strike, as have inland campuses, such as São Carlos. They oppose other structures, such as the Faculty of Law, the Poli, the Faculty of Economics, Accounting and Actuarial Administration (FEA-USP) and the Faculty of Medicine, which have already decided to end the strike and resume academic activities .
USP professors also gathered in a general meeting on Tuesday and voted to end the strike. The category, in a letter addressed to the rector, states that it recognizes the progress made in the negotiations, such as the hiring of more than a thousand teachers and that the university will not close any courses due to lack of teachers.
Nonetheless, they reaffirmed their support for the student strike and defended the continuity of the mobilizations to ensure that the rectory keeps its promises.
On Tuesday, Rector Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior said, via video, that the university “cannot stop” and that the rectorate moved forward and improved “what was already being done, within the limits of responsibility.” According to him, the 1,027 new vacancies for professors “represent the largest hiring program ever carried out in a Brazilian university” and the expansion of scholarships demonstrates the rectory’s “goodwill” in the negotiations.
“So let’s go back to lessons, research and our routines, this is what society expects from us,” Carlotti asked. “Our coat of arms says: with science you will win. With science, knowledge and dialogue USP will win.”
