After cursed houses, cursed family. The creator Mike Flanaganwho made a big name for horror on the small screen, attacks the monument: The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. This story, published in 1839, has been adapted for film several times, most notably with Vincent Price under the direction of Roger Corman in 1960.
63 years later, for Netflix, the writer-director departs somewhat from the original story to tell the curse of the modern family. The Usher family, this time, is at the helm of a pharmaceutical empire reminiscent of the Sackler family, which is largely responsible for the opioid crisis in the United States.
For this new project, Mike Flanagan changes his style. The Gothic remains, but the sadness of The Hauting series gives way to a more satirical, extravagant – described by some in America as “Camp“- and sexier too. There are no real heroes and villains in the Usher family. It’s a volume that’s both loathsome and amoral, yet endearing – especially during this somewhat fraught family dinner.

The entire cast is great, the sets and sound effects are great, but perhaps the story structure may put off some viewers. To tell the fortunes of the elders, the story multiplies before returning to the past, finally returning to the present, and so on. In fact, what we are really interested in is the answer to this question: Who killed the Asher children and why?
Secrets and mystery are revealed gradually, but perhaps The Fall of House Usher would have been more effective with a less complex structure. Mike Flanagan’s series continues to be a quality work that oscillates between different genres – horror, drama, comedy. But it’s scary that the show is at its most exciting, like that sour final scene of episode 2.
The Fall of the House of Usher is available on Netflix.
