Is The Exorcist a good movie? Here’s what early viewers are thinking about Devotion, the sequel

The Exorcist – Devotion, the sequel to William Friedkin’s cult film, hits theaters on Wednesday, October 11th. Directed by David Gordon Green and produced by Jason Blum, the film is set in the United States today.

Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) is raising his daughter Angela (Lydia Jewett) alone. One day, Angela and her friend Catherine (Olivia O’Neill) disappear into the woods, only to reappear 72 hours later with no memory of what happened…

Since then, strange events follow each other and Victor has to face terrible evil forces. Desperate and terrified, she echoes the only person alive who has ever witnessed such events: Chris McNeill (Ellen Boorstyn).

David Gordon Green and Jason Blum use the same formula here as in the last Halloween trilogy: bring back the cast from the original film and continue the story of the first opus without considering the sequel. If the American press is not kind to the horror film, what will the first French audiences think of it?

Internet users who have posted their reviews of AlloCiné seem less categorical, as the film has – to date – an average rating of 2.6/5 stars. The latter in particular finds that The Exorcist – Allegiance offers an interesting reflection on human nature and beliefs, and finds itself to be a good horror film overall.

AlloCiné Club member Direct-actu.fr writes:The new movie The Exorcist offers many interesting elements for lovers of comparative theology or occult sciences.(…)

It expertly marries classic horror elements with reflections on human nature, faith and family love. (…) With a clever plot, solid performances and a creepy atmosphere, this film deserves a place among modern horror classics.”

On the other hand, Internet user Zack notes: “This film is not meant to be pretentious. It brings ingredients that we already know to be a 1973 film. We avoid copy/paste and above all we avoid the esotericism that disrupts the rhythm of every plot and makes it too fantastical ..”

For Michael Bourdon, it is “A very good movie that obviously doesn’t compare to the original because nothing compares to a masterpiece William Friedkin. But this movie is very good compared to the horror movies on offer these days.”

A sequel that suffers from comparison

This sequel was released 50 years after the iconic film William FriedkinHe seems to suffer from comparisons with his elder and would benefit from not claiming the offspring that inevitably imposes comparisons.

So, where the original film took its time and picked up suspense, Devotion continues the jump scares, as noted by member DamienReloaded, who gave it a 1.5/5 star rating:

The Exorcist dedication knew nothing of Blatt’s novel and the Friedkin film on which it was inspired. We are faced with a work that tries to make a leap to the detriment of fear, any real and psychological suffering..”

The same Internet user notes that the presenceEllen Burstyn Casting was not really necessary: “Besides the return of Ellen Boorstyn, Chris McNeil at 90 is absolutely absurd..”

An idea shared by Chuck: “Despite some good ideas, the film doesn’t live up to its contract. It’s very slow, much less oppressive and scary than the original. Even if the cameo is spot on, the film is still pretty weak, looking more like a B-series episode than a horror movie.R.”

For Sunshine1, who rates it 1/5, the staging is “Worthy of a TV movie“And poor quality visual effects.”No matter how much we criticize devil’s prey or The Exorcist of the Vatican Just released, but they still managed to pull off their grand Guinolesque ending with scenes that are truly eye-popping for roller-coasters.

But it cost the same budget or more and we wonder where the money went. There are almost no scenes with quality sfx. A production worthy of a TV movie without real innovations, slow and endless dialogues and above all without tension throughout the film“.

The Exorcist – Devotion is currently in theaters.
