Of all the directors who have weighed in on Barbie since its release in mid-July, this one is perhaps the most unexpected. But John Carpenter saw a Greta Gerwig feature film. And he is the first to be surprised.
“I can’t believe I saw Barbie.”declares the father of Halloween, The Thing and New York 1997 in an interview. Los Angeles Times On the occasion of the release of Suburban Screams. From October 13th in the United States of America, an anthological (and clearly terrifying) mini-series is expected, the initiator of which is the author of several episodes.
John Carpenter admits he hasn’t been to the movies in a while and saw the current biggest hit of 2023 at home. But it didn’t really speak to him: “This is not my generation. I have nothing to do with the Barbie doll and I didn’t even know who Alan was.”
“I can sum it up, eh. It says ‘I don’t have a vagina’ and at the end, ‘I’m going to the gynaecologist’. That’s the movie for me. Of course there is. There’s a patriarchal story in it, but I missed all that, it crossed my mind, but I I understand Margot Robbie It’s fabulous.”
Coming from a filmmaker known for his very negative outings that may have given him a bitter image in the media, these relatively non-virulent comments almost suggest that he liked Greta Gerwig’s film.
And his compliment to Margot Robbie may have viewers dreaming of directing the actress, whose last feature film dates back to 2011’s The Ward alongside Amber Heard.
