Is it worth checking out?

So it’s a surprise! Only a few years after the Goosebumps movies hit theaters, we can question the merits of the new serialized adaptation of RL Stine’s novels. Especially since the trailer was not good. The picture, too dark, did not do justice to the pop tone of the original series and the colorful covers of the books.

However, this new project – very different from the series and films of the nineties – is a great surprise. No more anthology format here. The story follows the same characters over ten episodes, a group of teenagers who pay the price for their parents’ mistakes. Various tribes interfere with the plot. Each episode focuses on a character and adapts one of the books in the collection.

Yes, photography is very boring. This artistic choice is tentative and unfortunate. But the quality is there! This Goosebumps 2023 updates the RL Stine stories with a less childish tone – the series is clearly not intended for children – and much scarier. Not enough to rock you at night, not enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, but we are happy to immerse ourselves in this fantastical world and give ourselves easily to this new story.

All this thanks to the excellent pace – hard to get bored -, convincing casting – especially A Justin Long Very good as the spirit-possessed teacher – and quite successful visual effects. For early fans, it’s especially nice to rediscover iconic volumes – like this one Haunted mask or Dangerous photos – in a new way, not to mention the big return of Slap, the evil doll, scarier than ever. Perfect for Halloween!

The first 5 episodes of Goosebumps are available starting October 13th. The other 5 are released weekly.
