Actor Trevante Rhodes transforms into Mike Tyson in the television series about the boxing legend.
The trailer for the upcoming Hulu original series, Mike, Inspired by the life of the controversial boxing champion Mike Tyson, it has just been published with Trevante Rhodes as the protagonist. And the actor not only nails the boxer’s mannerisms, especially in that distinctive voice, but also his impressive physique.
In addition to a series reflecting some of the most high-profile incidents from Tyson’s life and career, including that notorious bite on Holyfiled’s ear and what appears to be a portrait of domestic violence, the trailer includes several shirtless scenes, in in which it’s clear that the razor-sharp Rhodes has packed on even more muscle to believably portray this heavyweight legend.
This isn’t the first time Rhodes’ physicality has been an integral part of his performance. In his defining role as the adult Chiron in moonlit Barry Jenkins’s 2018 Oscar winner was the first time audiences saw it; Naked, his hulking, intimidating torso contrasts sharply with the skinny, vulnerable teenager viewers had grown attached to earlier in the film.
Since then, he has not stopped training and gaining more and more muscle. “I wake up at 4:30, meditate, then go to the gym for a couple of hours, do sit-ups, whatever muscle is for the day, run, and we start our day at eight,” the actor explains to Men’s Health. “I think everything starts mentally and spiritually, emotionally.”
Rhodes’ transformation into Tyson in the trailer for Mike he’s impressive, but he’ll also have some stiff competition: actor/musician Jamie Foxx is also currently in the process of playing the boxer for a movie.
