At the beginning of “The Ring Partnership”, a small line uttered by the Hobbits is aimed directly at fans of the original works signed by Tolkien. Did you notice it?
We are in The Fellowship of the Ring, the first opus of the trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson and adapted from the work of JRR Tolkien. On the way to the town of Bryce and L’Oberge du Pony Fringite, where they are to be reunited with Gandalf, Frodo and Sam quietly cross the fields of the terrible Per Magot.
That’s when they are joined by their two friends Mary and Pippin. The latter, chased by a peasant from whom the vegetables were stolen, leads Frodo and Sam in flight, then fall when they suddenly fall off a small cliff.
“It was just a detour. Shortcut!”excuses merry landing.
“Where is the shortcut?”Sam then asks him, obviously slightly irritated.
“Mushrooms!”– Pipin shouts when he sees the beautiful beats on the trail.
This small discussion, seemingly harmless (and from the very first day of the filming of the trilogy), actually includes a clever little reference to Tolkien’s books, and especially to the fourth chapter of the first volume, entitled … “Shortcut to the Mushroom.”
“Lies I’m sure there will be something connecting for book lovers. “Explains Sean Astin, Sam’s translator, in an audio commentary on the film. “It’s rare to give his title. He managed to put it in dialogue.”
As fans know, the chapter in Tolkien’s book does not happen exactly as it does in a feature film. We are really following the journey of Frodo, Sam and Pippin, who are very concerned about the idea of meeting the famous Father Magote, but in the end, the latter is warmly welcomed. After informing Frodo that he is looking for a strange black rider, the peasant will guide the hobbits to the right path where they will finally find the mayor.
