At J10 the doctor explains Neymar’s injury and talks about his recovery

The main name of Brazilian football, Neymar will be sidelined for a long time. The number 10 suffered a sprained left knee defeat of the Brazilian team against Uruguay, last Tuesdayand the diagnosis was not good. The Al-Hilal player tore his anterior cruciate and meniscus ligaments.

Having said that, Neymar will have to undergo surgery and there is still no deadline for his return to the pitch. In this type of injury the average time lasts six to eight months, but can vary depending on recovery.

In an interview with Jogada10, Dr. Rene Abdalla, from the Hcor São Paulo Knee Institute, spoke on the topic and explained the injury. An expert on the subject, the orthopedist said that it is a complex injury.

“Assuming that it is a lesion of the anterior cruciate ligament, it is a structure that controls the anterior and lateral translation of the tibia, which is very important in sport. The symptom of those who have this lesion in the medium and long term is that of feeling a knee sprain as if it were an imbalance incompatible with sport. The operation consists in the replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament with a graft whose options are different, from the central 1/3 of the patellar tendon (under the kneecap), posterior tendons of the thigh, part of the quadriceps that sits above the kneecap, and even so-called allografts, which are cadaveric transplants,” Abdalla said.

RETURN WITHOUT FORECAST

There is a possibility that Neymar will miss the entire rest of the season with Al-Hilal and only return to play for the Saudi Arabian club in 2024/25. For the Brazilian team, participation in the 2024 Copa América is at risk. The tournament will take place in June next year, in the United States.

“Rehabilitation is extremely important, starting the day after surgery. The average recovery time is six to eight months, as the graft must integrate and adapt to the new function. Often the injury is associated with the menisci, depending on the procedures can be adopted in different conditions”, concluded the orthopedist.
