Once upon a time there was a studiothe short film that celebrates the centenary of Disney, sees Robin Williams, an actor who passed away in 2014, returning to lend the voice of the Genie, from Aladdin. And the production did not resort to artificial intelligence.
In an interview with EWDan Abraham, co-director of the short film, explained that he found old recordings of Robin Williams to use in the production. They were created by the actor when he voiced the Genie, but were discarded from the final version of Aladdin.
According to Abraham, they went through about 16 hours of footage to find the right parts for the short film. Disney also obtained permission to use the material.
The producers’ attitude is in line with the wishes of Zelda Williams, the actor’s daughter. Recently, she took to social media to criticize the use of artificial intelligence to recreate Williams’ voice and likened the work to creating a Frankenstein.
