It’s one of the weirdest horror movies you’ll ever see, and it’s under the radar

We all have a little inner voice. One that resonates in good times, but especially in bad. Outgrowth turns this idea into a horror film and takes the concept much further than you might imagine. Written and directed by Anna Zlokovic, the project was first born from an episode of the horror series Bite Size Halloween.

The story, turned into a feature film, tells the story of Hannah (Hadley Robinson), a troubled young fashion designer. His life is turned upside down when his body expels a parasite that speaks all his bad thoughts out loud. Hannah is not alone in this situation. Others have also caused a demonic growth that, if not calmed, threatens to grow…

If this pitch is crazy enough to pique your curiosity, a few caveats: The Croissant fits squarely in the B-series style—a term given to these low-budget or intentionally kitsch films. Here, the strange creature is not realized with digital effects. It is the practical effect, hence the doll, that makes the feature film even more outstanding.

Some may find Outgrowth to be spoiled before its time, but it’s clearly a tribute to the lesser horror films of the eighties. We’re thinking in particular of Elmer the Brainstorm, a completely insane little rarity that came out in 1988, at a similar pace.

After this effect, which can be disturbing, it is impossible not to give Excroissance its originality and its purpose to propose a work that marks the current horror cinema.

Outgrowth is available on Disney+.
