A group of Hollywood actors proposes to end the strike

The end of the Hollywood strike may be near. A group of actors led by George Clooney, Emma Stone, Ben Affleck and Scarlett Johansson has submitted a proposal to SAG-AFTRA (United States actors union) that would release up to 150 million dollars, more than R$ 758 million, in three years. The money could be used to satisfy the category’s requests.

Confirmation of the proposal came to light after news that big names in Hollywood had pressured union leaders to end the labor strike.

The group of actors proposed removing the limit of $1 million, about R$5 million, from union dues. This would mean that the organization’s annual revenue would increase significantly, allowing for the payment of residuals to the lowest-paid actors, one of the requirements for ending the strike.

The union is calling for the release of $500 million a year for these payments that are made to actors and other professionals when the works in which they participate are streamed. The studios, however, have signaled they are only willing to release about $20 million.

According to information released by the US press, the two sides are close to a middle ground on other issues, such as the use of artificial intelligence in audiovisual productions and increasing actors’ salaries. Therefore, payment of the residues became essential for the eventual end of the strike.
