Many filmmakers would dream of seeing their lowest-rated film average 3.6/5 by AlloCiné viewers. In any case, it’s a privilege for Quentin Tarantino, whose film is the least appreciated by AlloCiné Internet users (Drama Role)… Boulevard of Death!
Hitting our screens in 2007 after its preview at the Cannes Film Festival, Death Boulevard is the fifth feature film directed by QT (who counts his Kill Bill diptych as one film).
In an homage to the B and Z series of the 70s, Kurt Russell steps into the shoes of a serial killer who punishes his victims behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Nova. Designed to withstand cinema stunts, this car offers its driver the luxury of consideration “Death Proof”.
Two different edits for the same movie
The version of the film that the French public discovered in the cinema was not to Quentin Tarantino’s liking. Death Boulevard was originally conceived as a two-part feature film with Robert Rodriguez (writer of the zombie film Planet Terror).
Fake trailers created by guest directors (Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie, Eli Roth) were inserted in the middle of the screening to mark the separation of the two films and thus pay homage to the double-bill Greenhouse screenings of American cinemas in the seventies. .
With the exception of a few special screenings, this version of the film was unfortunately never shown in French cinemas. Therefore, in an extended version with additional scenes (including the memorable circle dance sequence), but devoid of content produced by other directors, we have come to Boulevard of Death.
Fake Grindhouse trailer:
As soon as it was released, this Tarantino, who was considered too talkative, was not unanimously accepted by the director’s fans. And if the years have allowed the film to be rehabilitated by moviegoers, it’s no wonder that it’s still the most underrated of all his films.
Few works in QT’s filmography rank lower than Death Boulevard. Notable are Groom Service (the film is divided into four sketches, only one of which is directed by Tarantino), My Best Friend’s Birthday (his first unfinished and unreleased film) or even his episodes filmed for the series Urgences and Les Experts.
Quentin Tarantino’s Death Boulevard will no longer be available on Netflix starting October 31st.
