Netflix: A moving and chilling horror film that only Spaniards could make, you shouldn’t miss it

Spanish horror cinema is full of gems for thrill seekers. One of his masters, who has been awarded several times at the Gérardmer International Fantasy Film Festival, is called Paco Plaza. We owe him, in particular, Les Enfants d’Abraham and Hell of Wolves, but above all his greatest critical and commercial success and its sequels.

Co-directed with Jaume Balaguero, it relaunched the found footage genre and scared many audiences in the late 2000s. Before returning to cinema in 2022 with Abuela, Paco Plaza directed another horror film that left its mark in 2017: Veronica.

Inspired by a true story that took place in the 1990s that marked the history of Spain, Veronica recounts the disastrous results of a spiritualism session gone wrong for teenage girls.

Six years later, Paco Plaza decided to expand Veronica’s world – Conjuring -style – with a prequel called The Orders of Evil (Hermana Muerte, (Sister of Death), the original version), available today on Netflix. .

This new horror feature should please fans of The Nun movies – from the Conjuring franchise and box office hits – as it goes back to the origins of the character introduced in Veronica: a widowed nun who tried to help. A heroine, like a sister of death.

In addition to directing, Paco Plaza signs the intense script of the feature film with Jorge Guericachevarria (Hasta el cielo, Las leyes de la frontera), played by an engaged cast, especially Aria Bedmar, who has the difficult task of performing grace and strength in the shoes of Death’s sister.

The Order of Evil tells the story of how death came to be what it was. In the 1930s, she was just a young girl named Narcissa, nicknamed the Holy Daughter of Peroblasco, after the Virgin Mary appeared to her.

Ten years after this minor miracle and the end of the war, Narcissa entered a convent to teach vulnerable young girls and take her religious vows. But Da quickly realizes that this place is haunted by a terrible creature from the past, and only she can defeat this evil.

Built in 3 chapters, The Order of Evil follows the journey of a nun haunted by visions of being a vessel for vengeance, both human and demonic. As in his previous films, Paco Plaza knows how to establish a heavy and tough atmosphere without jump scares or the usual scary sequences.

Fear combines religious and naturalistic imagery with demonic folklore and the supernatural, which Veronica suggests, and perhaps evokes less superficial fear than visceral fear. With a tragic human story set in the aftermath of war and the after-effects of its traumas, Orders of Evil is an original prequel that should move its audience.
