Available on Netflix since October 27th, The Orders of Evil (Hermana Muerte, (The Sister of Death), Original Version) is the new horror film from Paco Plaza. The Spanish director has become a master of the genre in his country and is best known for his huge critical and commercial successes, but also for his sequels.
Orders of Evil is set in post-war Spain and follows the journey of Narcissa (Aria Bedmar), a young novice with supernatural powers who arrives at a former convent converted into a girls’ school to become a teacher and take orders.
As the days pass, strange occurrences and increasingly disturbing situations plague him, prompting him to unravel the terrifying tangle of mysteries that surrounds the monastery and haunts its inhabitants.
This new chilling and moving horror film from Paco Plaza is not a trivial project in his filmography as it is connected to his other feature film.
One horror movie can hide another
Evil Orders is actually a prequel to the 2017 film Veronica, which was a success at the Spanish box office. It tells the story of Veronica (Sandra Escacena), a young high school student who participates in a spiritualism session with friends during a solar eclipse in the early 1990s.
The teenager had no idea that he was being harassed by supernatural beings who were attacking his family. Then he will try everything to get rid of this dangerous disease. In his research, he can count on the help of Sister Muerte (Consuelo Trujillo), an elderly and blind nun with a troubled past who serves at Veronica’s school.
And it turns out that the orders of evil are focusing on this sister of death and the origin of her story. The film tells the story of his childhood in the 1930s and his teenage years ten years later in a convent converted into a school that marked his life forever. It was after this traumatic paranormal experience that she became Da Muerte.
In order to establish a direct connection between the Evil Orders and Veronica, Paco Plaza thus inserted the final scene at the end of the Evil Orders: the arrival of Dis Muerte at Veronica’s school in early 1990. The young girl is also disturbed by the arrival of a famous nun and does not yet suspect the supernatural experience she is having.
For now, Paco Plaza has expanded Veronica’s universe with a prequel – Evil Orders – but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Spanish director tries to develop other spin-offs or sequels, Conjuring-style, if he succeeds. The movie is there.
The film The Order of Evil is available on Netflix.
