VAR audio explains the controversial penalty scored in Corinthians x Santos: “He made the step”

Bruno Méndez commits an infringement against Soteldo in the latter part of the second half, which ensures a 1-1 draw at the Neo Química Arena

The contested sanction which allowed the Santos the 1-1 draw against Corinthians, in injury time of the classic played on Sunday at the Neo Química Arena, was scored by referee Anderson Daronco because the assessment was that Bruno Méndez “followed in the footsteps” of Soteldo. This analysis, carried out by Daronco together with the video refereeing team, led by Wagner Reway, can be heard in the VAR audio released by the CBF this Monday.

During the action Soteldo advanced on the left side of the Corinthians area and ended up on the ground after the impact with Méndez’s foot. Daronco does not whistle a foul and says his vision was obscured at the time of the action, after VAR warned of a possible penalty. He also asks to go to TV. “I can’t see if there’s a touch on the foot because I’m covered. If there’s a step on it, I want to see it,” he says.

Analyzing the images, Reway suspects that Santos’ attacker may have carried out a simulation, but concludes that he was shot down. “There is the touch. Now I want to see it from another perspective. I want to see if he seeks contact. No, he doesn’t seek contact, he is going at pace”, he evaluates.

Then the revision is recommended to Daronco. “The player stops his step, puts his foot where he was supposed to pass. Penalty. Daronco, I advise you to see him again as soon as possible, penalty, ok?” After analyzing the image, the on-field referee agrees with his VAR partner. “With that touch he ends up wearing it… If he puts it in calmly. The decision is a penalty without a yellow card.”

The decision sparked outrage among Corinthians fans, who complained a lot after the match. “The penalty is absurd, because it is clear that Bruno Méndez’s foot is on the ground when the Santos player’s foot sticks out,” coach Mano Menezes said. “There’s no way to score. Maybe, when you have immense goodwill on one side or the other, you score. But even in that situation you wouldn’t be able to score,” he added.

Alessandro, sporting director of Corinthians, said that he will “ask the Arbitration Commission” and that he expects a clear analysis of the offer. “In cases like these they usually release videos of what happened and we want a clear analysis. We want to know what led to the penalty being awarded if it was Soteldo who stepped on Bruno’s toe.”

The draw left Corinthians in 14th place in the Brasileirão, with 37 points, five behind Goiás, the first team in the relegation zone. If the injury time goal had not arrived, the Sao Paulo team would have seven points difference on Goiás’ team. Santos, in turn, was 16th, with 34, just above Goiás.
