Barbie: Ryan Gosling’s biggest inspiration for Ken, according to Greta Gerwig

One of the biggest films of recent years, and the highest grossing film in 2023, Barbie was inspired by more than 30 films, according to Greta Gerwig. However, the influences were not only narrative and aesthetic, but also on the characters. According to the director, Ryan Gosling was inspired by a big action movie star to prepare to play Ken.

At an event of DGA (Directors Guild Of Americaunion of directors of Hollywood), according to information from People, Gerwig spoke about the details behind the performance of Gosling in the film, one of the great highlights alongside Margot Robbie (Barbie).

“Ryan Gosling love Sylvester Stallone as much as me. We had so much time to think about this character, talk about him, and Stallone always came up again in our conversations,” said the director. “That fur coat that Ken wears at the end of the film is a direct reference to Stallonewhich has always been very stylish.”

“Sly is the best of the lot in that sense, and Ken is a man looking for ornamentation,” he continued Greta Gerwig. “It was a key moment in my conversations with Ryan in which we defined that he wanted to be like Slyand then we started talking about specific moments we loved in his films.”
