In 1982, a young Henry Thomas landed a role that would change his life. It’s Elliot, a high school student who meets ET, a strange extraterrestrial, whom he must help return home. Forty years later, this character is still at it. We almost forget that the actor starred in other productions after that (notably, he filmed Gangs of New York for Scorsese).
But in recent years, Henry Thomas has returned to success. And that’s thanks to one man: Mike Flanagan, the new king of horror. The American director appeared in the public eye in 2018 thanks to his first collaboration with Netflix: The Haunting of Hill House. A terrifying and poetic adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunted House, which is considered one of the best series of recent years.
Revival of Henry Thomas
The cast includes actors he’s already played, as well as new talent that has since caught Hollywood’s attention. After they starred in Jesse (an adaptation of the Stephen King story) the year before, Flanagan offered Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas the role of a couple with children who had just bought a house.
This will be the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between the director, Netflix and almost all of these actors. The former ’80s star next appears in The Haunting of Bly Manor, this time playing a long-lost uncle who appears to have made a deal with the devil. We next see him again in Midnight Sermons, where he plays the father of Thomas (Zach Guilford).
For several weeks now, Henry Thomas has been starring in House of Usher Falling on Netflix, Flanagan’s latest production for the streaming platform. This time he is part of a rich and dysfunctional family whose members die one by one for unknown reasons.
Outstanding talent
With these different roles, Henry Thomas proves that the horror genre is particularly suited to him. Sometimes he is the father of demons, sometimes he is a businessman immersed in alcohol and madness.
in the given interview slash film Last year, the actor revealed that he found himself in this genre by accident: “Since 2014, Flanagan has been taking me on various projects, so people have been associated with horror for a few years. But no, it wasn’t a natural choice. However, I really like everything Mike writes and the product. He’s created his own style.”.
To date, the two friends have collaborated on 8 projects together since 2014, and there will surely be more.
