This is a new nugget from Netflix. A few days ago, subscribers were able to discover the four-part historical series “All the Light We Cannot See”, which will immerse us in occupied France during the Second World War.
Its plot revolves around the character of Marie-Laurie, a young girl impeccably played by blind actress Aria Mia Laubert, and a German soldier (Louis Hoffman). Through a shared secret bond, they find faith in humanity and see a glimmer of hope.
Although it’s an English-language American production, the All the Light We Cannot See teams wanted to film in France… before they ran into their first problem.
Although the action takes place mainly in Saint-Malo (with a small part in Paris), the seaside town was partially destroyed during the war. And if its famous ramparts still stand, it has unfortunately lost a large part of the central square and the church.
The scenes by the sea, near the ramparts, could have been shot in Brittany, but it was necessary to find another city with architecture reminiscent of the 1940s. That’s what production designer Simon Elliott thinks about the small town of Villefranche-de-France. – Rouergue is located in the south of France, not far from Rodes, which he visited during his vacation.
According to the city’s website, the producers fell under a spell. Narrow, cobbled streets and various squares perfectly match the atmosphere and line of the series, as evidenced by Photos published in this article.
Interior scenes were filmed in Budapest studios.
All the Light We Cannot See is on Netflix.
