In 2016, the French discovered a new film by Uruguayan Fede Alvarez (behind the Evil Dead remake): Don’t Breathe, House of Darkness in cinemas. This master of horror and fake blood plunges us into a suffocating closed atmosphere, the summary of which is as follows:
To escape from his mother’s abuse and save his younger sister without a future, Rocky is ready for anything. Together with his friends Alex and Money, he has already committed several robberies, but nothing brings them enough to finally leave Detroit.
When the trio learns of a blind man who lives alone and keeps a small fortune at home, they prepare what they believe will be their ultimate hit. But their victim turns out to be much more terrible and above all more dangerous than they expected…
The director left an hour and a half of tension and twists for the audience. And don’t breathe turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. With a budget of just $9 million and lesser-known headliners (Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette in the lead roles), the film was a huge success, grossing over $157 million at the box office.
Stephen Lang, a regular villain in movies (as in Avatar), terrorized the audience as this blind ex-soldier who was willing to do anything to stop three young men from robbing his house.
Because of the character’s blindness, Fede Alvarez and his team did a great job with the lighting and sounds to make it more immersive.
All of the “Don’t Breathe” actors also played a game of wearing special contact lenses for scenes in the dark to keep their eyes from adjusting to the low light and also reduce their eyesight.
With an honorable rating of 3.8/5, this horror film can be considered a little gem that should not be missed. And you only have a few days left until it hits Prime Video on November 14th.
Also note that the feature film sequel, Don’t Breathe 2, is available on Netflix.
