Extraordinary black comedy behind the scenes of the seventh art, shooting in Seoul! Cobweb , which hits theaters this Wednesday, marks a new collaboration from I Met the Devil director Kim Ji-woon with Parasite star Song Kang-ho.

The South Korean feature film, which was presented out of competition at the recent Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of a filmmaker who wants to redo the ending of his film at all costs. Apart from that, the censor bodies as well as complaints from the actors and producers keep interfering and there is a lot of chaos on the sets. The director must then overcome this chaos to complete what he believes is his ultimate masterpiece…

The line here is magnified and that’s what gives this It’s Turning in Seoul charm! Cobweb which offers an unusual and fun look at the intricacies of filmmaking. “I thought that showing the atmosphere of the filming could interest the public. (…) I wanted to show the absurd side of it all, all these people struggling to do something. I thought it could be quite funny.”Kim Ji-woon opened up in Cannes.

The choice for the character of the director very quickly fell on Song Kang-ho. “On the set, he’s practically like a second director”Kim Ji-woon notes. “He has an aura, a presence. He always gives us the craziness, his imagination, and he gives off a huge energy. All of that, I needed him for this role.”

“It was really nice, something I’ve never done before”Adds Song Kang-Ho about this role as another. “As an actor, I was just observing on the set. That’s why this project was so interesting.”

Finally, Kim Ji-woon reveals that if he shoots in Seoul! Cobweb was born, perhaps thanks to the pandemic! “The world stopped for a year, we couldn’t go to the cinema”he declares. “Everything stopped and suddenly, all people and even directors, including myself, wondered what cinema is, the essence of cinema. That’s why I think many directors like it. Damien Chazelle, Nani Moretti or Steven Spielberg I recently made films about cinema, because it made us think about the essence of this art.”
