The Brazilian team will debut in the Under 17 World Cup next Saturday (11th), against Iran, at 9am (Brasilia time), in the first match of the group stage of the tournament. With the aim of winning their fifth world championship, Brazil is racking up records in the competition, which has 24 entries and starts this Friday, running until December, in Indonesia.
Hopscotch has the most World Cup appearances in the category, with 18 appearances, tied with the United States. The first time Brazil participated in the tournament was in the inaugural 1985 edition, held in China, where the age limit was 16. The team won third place after beating Mali in the competition.
In these 18 participations, the Brazilian team won the cup in 1997, 1999, 2003 and 2019. Furthermore, it placed second in 1995 and 2005 and third place in 1985 and 2017.
Since then, the country has taken the field 89 times in the Under 17 World Cup, distinguishing itself as a leader in this sense too. In total, the Brazilians found the net 199 times, with an average of 2.23 goals per game. Saturday’s match, therefore, could represent Brazil’s 200th goal in the competition.
Current champions, the Seleção have the longest winning streak in the league, with eight games. The unbeaten record has been maintained since the match valid for third place in the 2017 edition, won against Mali. At the 2019 World Championships, the team, which had Phelipe Leal – current coach of the category – as technical assistant for the victory, won all seven matches.
