In 2017, Ridley Scott looks at the true story of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, the grandson of oil magnate J. Paul Getty, which took place in Rome in 1973.
Although the Calabrian mafia demands a ransom of 17 million dollars, the billionaire believes that the kidnapping of his beloved grandson is not enough reason to distribute part of his fortune. On the other hand, Paul’s mother will do anything to free him, especially joining forces with a former CIA agent.
The movie, titled All the Money in the World, was already in development when Kevin Spacey, who plays J. Paul Getty, was accused of multiple sexual assaults by several people.
Under the guidance, Ridley Scott decided, in agreement with his producers and studios, to remove the actor from the feature film and reshoot all of his scenes with Christopher Plummer, who he claimed was his first choice for the character.
The latter turns out to be perfect in the role of this billionaire who treats every human relationship as a transaction. Because here Ridley Scott is less interested in reconstructing abduction than in developing a reflection on the power of money. And that’s about it All the money in the world is the clearest.
