We only told you about it earlier in the week: the famous gag of a distraught Homer choking Bart should be gone from The Simpsons. And it’s not an understatement to say that this decision got fans talking, at least online.
Of course, everyone has an opinion here. Today, the executive producers of The Simpsons prepared a response in the form of a cartoon posted on Twitter:
Homer Simpson was unavailable for comment because he was busy drowning Bart. pic.twitter.com/Yh6koeqTQS
— The Simpsons (@TheSimpsons) November 9, 2023
With this comment: “Homer Simpson, who was busy strangling Bart, could not be reached for commentAnd in the balloon of the painting Homer says:WHY IS THIS CLICK!!“
The frenzy erupted after the “McMansion & Wife” episode that aired Oct. 22 on Fox. In this episode, the third in season 35, Homer jokes that all those years of smothering Bart have been rewarded with an already firm handshake. But then he adds:I don’t do it anymore. Times have changed.“
Once people noticed this, it sparked hundreds of posts and opinions on social media. Some applauded the series for making Homer a “good” father, while others lamented the change in times…
But as true Simpsons fans have pointed out, Homer actually stopped choking Bart for several seasons, with the last documented occurrence occurring in Season 31.
The show’s producers and loyal fans have been surprised by last week’s disproportionate reaction, given that it’s actually old news — or at least, news that hasn’t raised eyebrows before.
Homer choking Bart has been around since the early animated shorts of The Tracey Ullman Show — but the choking in the series goes beyond these two characters.
