EPTC rescues 23 horses and offers adoption opportunities in Porto Alegre

Recovered animals receive permanent identification and await new homes

The Public Transport and Traffic Authority (EPTC) intensifies its horse adoption program, removing 23 horses from the streets, highlighting the dangers of these animals in the wild. With a total of 34 horses in the shelter’s care, EPTC has already adopted 72 horses from January to October this year, all delivered recovered and with permanent identification microchips.

EPTC CEO Pedro Bisch Neto underlines the importance of the microchip: “With individual identification we guarantee efficiency in monitoring the history and well-being of these animals.” The microchip, the size of a grain of rice, is implanted under the horse’s skin, in the neck region, without causing harm to health, allowing data to be read via scanner and efficient management.

EPTC conducts annual inspections to monitor the welfare of adopted animals. In 2023, more than three hundred horses were taken, 32 in October alone, coming from prohibited areas or victims of mistreatment. Current legislation restricts the movement of animal-drawn vehicles in some areas and the return of stray, healthy and microchipped horses to their owners is a practice adopted by the EPTC.

Community adoption of horses requires adopters to have a suitable place to keep the animals in good conditions, with a ban on subjecting them to heavy work or sporting activities. Reporting cases of abandonment or mistreatment can be made by calling 118 and 156 of the Citizen Service, contributing to the inspection and rescue actions carried out by the EPTC. The EPTC shelter, located in the Lami district, can be visited by appointment for anyone seeking information on adoption.
