The Brazilian summer spares no one, from the north to the south of the country, with temperatures around 40°C, when we are not affected by heat waves.
Those who live on the coast can still count on the sea breeze to relieve the heat, others use air conditioners. However, most of us have to “make do” to suffer less from high temperatures, which make us sweat and hinder even the most common activities, such as sleeping. Difficult, isn’t it?
The good news is that there are simple changes you can make to your home decor to lower the temperature in your rooms. Check out the five tips below.
1. Minimalist decor
Rugs and pillows enhance your room’s decor, but they also retain heat, especially if they’re made from warm fabrics, like velvet. So, keep all these items in a closet and make your home more minimalist.
Where decoration is essential, such as window curtains, replace heavy fabric models with lighter ones, such as cotton. Also, choose items in lighter colors that reflect light and heat rather than retain it.
2. Invest in cotton
Speaking of cotton, it’s also the best choice for summer sheets. Satin and silk may feel colder due to their cold touch, but they actually warm up more. Cotton allows the body to breathe, as well as contributing to the circulation of air in the environment, since it is a natural fibre.
Another interesting tip for sleeping warm is to put your sheets in the refrigerator, obviously wrapped in a plastic bag. The feeling of freshness doesn’t last all night, but it should be enough to relax you and fall asleep.

3. It opens and closes
During the day, you can close curtains and blinds to prevent sunlight from entering your rooms, especially if you spend all day working outdoors. However, at night, open as many doors and windows as possible to promote cross ventilation.
Speaking of ventilation, a simple tip for relieving the heat is to place a bottle of ice water in front of the fan, so that a cooler breeze blows. Another idea is: if you have a ceiling fan, turn it into an exhaust fan and place the table fan facing outside: this way, the hot breath will come out of the window and the room will be comfortable.

4. Forest at home
Do you like taking care of plants? Therefore, know that they can be excellent allies in fighting the heat at home, as they help to cool the environment. Distribute them in the furniture and you will see how much more comfortable your home will become.
Another interesting tip, in this sense, is to humidify the air in the rooms. To do this, you can use humidifiers or improvise by spreading buckets of water or wet towels on the floor. Anything goes to relieve the heat.

5. Avoid turning up the heat
All you want most in the summer is to relieve the heat, not increase it. But there are several things we do to make this situation worse, without realizing it. Lights, for example: Replace warm-colored bulbs with cool lights, such as LED strips.
Also, turn off as many electronic devices as you can, as they accumulate heat even when not in use. Also avoid using the oven: take the opportunity to prepare a cold salad or prepare dishes that can be prepared in the microwave.

Finally, if your problem is sleeping in the heat, it’s worth trying other places besides the bed. Try placing a mattress on the floor, as cold air tends to stay underneath. Another great idea is to sleep in a hammock, especially if you place it on the balcony.
