Archaeologists, historians and engineers have created a 3D projection of Rome in the 4th century
History books, films and lessons often date back to the period of battles and discoveries ancient Rome. Although the imagination works well with these resources, one archaeologist decided to go further in the immersive experience of ancient Rome: he created a 3D digital reconstruction of the city in the 4th century AD
The “Roma Reborn: Flight over Ancient Rome” program was created by Bernard Frischer, of the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering at Indiana University.
Supported by educational technology company Flyover Zone, the site allows people to explore ancient Roman civilization.
The idea for the project was born almost 50 years ago, in 1974, when the archaeologist visited the Museum of Roman Civilization and saw a physical model of Ancient Rome.
How does 3D printing technology work?
Inspired by everything he saw at the museum, the then-researcher thought of a way to turn those models into virtual experiences. As a result, the work, which lasted for years, began to be developed with the help of archaeologists, engineers and historians.
They used a number of historical documents about what the capital of the Roman Empire was like in the early 4th century. Now you can navigate the 3D project through the main points of ancient Rome, such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum.
I looked at old plans and photographs of ruins and put it all together. I wanted to have a visualization so people immediately knew what the city would look like. In two hours of exploration, people today will know more than a doctoral student would have known in the 1970s.
The program Rome Reborn: Flight over Ancient Rome version 4.0 was released this month and is available for download at Yorescape.com.
An annual subscription of $49.99 is required to browse the virtual model. However, a free trial was available for launch until November 15th.
