If you appreciate German cinema, we recommend watching a film or series with Louis Hofmann. The young actor has gained fame in recent years, not only in Germany, and has won over a fascinated audience around the world. We have put together 5 productions in which Hofmann deserves to be seen.
The Netflix series Dark is probably the best-known title starring the actor, but Hofmann has increasingly distinguished himself, both in film and on television.
Every year Louis Hofmann receives more and more opportunities, whether in a good film or in a series. The success this time was Toda Luz que Não Podemos Ver, a Netflix original production. Fans praised the miniseries, so let’s start with that.
1- All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
The miniseries is Louis Hofmann’s most recent work and debuted in the Netflix catalog on November 2, with four episodes already available.
Based on the book of the same name by Anthony Doerr, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2014. The work became a selling phenomenon and received enthusiastic reviews. The miniseries, despite having been a success among the audience of the streaming platform, does not correspond to the narrative height and plot of the book.
The background of the story and setting is the Second World War. The story takes place in Nazi-occupied France and follows the trajectory of Marie, played by Aria Mia Loberti, and Werner, played by Hofmann.
In the last days of World War II, the paths of Marie, a blind French girl, and Werner, a Nazi soldier, cross. Marie lives with her father, Daniel LeBlanc (Mark Ruffalo), and the two flee the city after it is taken over by the Nazis. In the midst of his escape, Daniel also protects a legendary stone called the Sea of Flames, a rare and powerful object that is in the sights of the German army.
Over the course of four episodes we follow the protagonists’ return to the past, to understand how they live the present and the impact of the choices they will make for the future.
The cast also includes Hugh Laurie, from the House series, Lars Eidinger and Luna Wedler. It is directed by director Shawn Levy.
2- Land of Minas (2016)

The feature film Terra de Minas was nominated for an Oscar as best foreign film in 2016. Once again we have a film set at the end of the Second World War, in which Louis Hofmann plays Sebastian Schumann, a German soldier.
Imprisoned by the Danes, he belongs to a group of over 2,000 Nazi soldiers captured by the Allied forces to dig and defuse more than 2 million mines in Denmark, with their own hands! And detail, the film is based on real events.
The film is directed and written by Martin Zandvliet and, in addition to Louis Hofmann, the cast includes Roland Moller, Mikkel Boe Folsgaard and Joen Basman.
Terra de Minas received major recognition upon its release and gained festival exposure in Europe. To watch, it is available for purchase on Google Play or Apple TV.
3- The Forger (2022)

And don’t we have another film with Louis Hofmann set during World War II?! In this plot, Louis Hofmann is Cioma Schönhaus, a Jewish graphic designer living in Berlin in 1942. To escape deportation by the Nazis, he assumes the identity of a German naval officer and joins an underground group.
Cioma begins producing false identities and becomes famous for it. In this climate of war of the 1940s, in the nightlife of the city, the artist finds love, falsifying identities with her natural talent. And as a forger, she ends up saving many people’s lives.
The film is also inspired by a true story, taken from Cioma Schönhaus’s autobiography, published in 2004. Directed by Maggie Peren and starring actors Jonathan Berlin, Luna Wedler and Nina Gummich.
To date The Falsifier is not available on streaming platforms, but you can purchase or rent it on Prime Video, Google Play and Apple TV.
4- Freistatt (2015)

In this film, which has the English title Sanctuary, Louis Hofmann plays Wolfgang, a 14-year-old boy, who is deported by his family to the isolated sanctuary of the Institution called Church Welfare.
The narrative takes place in 1968 and traces the history of a Christian school active until the mid-1970s. The film shows that the institution functioned as a reformatory, where repression and violence were forms of learning. The site was somewhere between a labor camp and a maximum security prison, isolated in a landscape of mud and swamp.
Hofmann won the 2015 Bavarian Film Prize and the 2016 German Actors Prize (Deutscher Schauspielerpreis) as best new actor.
Freistatt was directed by Marc Brummund and stars, among others, Alexander Helg, Stephan Grossmann and Max Riemelt. It is available on HBO.
5- Dark (from 2017 to 2020)

Louis Hofmann’s best-known role, the series Jonas in the Dark, could not be left out. We can say that with this role Hofmann gained worldwide fame.
The Netflix original series captured the public’s attention with a plot, at times confusing and mysterious, and a good dose of science fiction. As the young version of Jonas, the boy takes part in an intricate plot involving the secrets of four families.
At first it’s a little difficult to identify all the roles and which family each character belongs to. They live in Winden, a quiet-looking town. However, everything changes with the disappearance of two children in the area near the city’s nuclear power plant.
Police investigations begin and the secrets of these families begin to emerge. And in that moment we are transported into scenes that intertwine in time and space, in a mysterious puzzle. The events of the present are also repeated in the tragedies of the past.
The series was created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese and the cast includes Louis Hofmann, Lisa Vicari and Andreas Pietschmann. The 25 episodes of the 3 seasons are available on Netflix.
