Warning, the following lines contain spoilers for New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 7. If you don’t want to know anything, move on!
The doctors of New Amsterdam will face a new tragedy. In Season 4 Episode 13, which airs this Wednesday at 10.50pm on TF1, Max Goodwin, Helen Sharpe and others learn of the death of one. Dr. Vijay Kapoor, played by Anupam Keri after the start of the medical series in 2018, will indeed die.
While he is arguing with his partner, Helen (Freema Agyeman) receives a call that seems to upset him deeply. It is only at the end of the episode that the mystery surrounding this phone call is revealed.
All the doctors rally around Ella to support her after the death of their friend Dr. Vijay Kapoor. Therefore, viewers will say goodbye to this emblematic character of New Amsterdam behind the camera.
As tragic as this death is, the departure doesn’t really come as a surprise to fans of the medical series, as Anupam Kher announced in April 2021 that he would not be returning for the rest of Season 3.
At that time, the actor cited personal reasons, his wife was suffering from blood cancer. After this ordeal, the actor decided to stay away from the set for a while. So we have to believe that Anupam Kher has decided to say goodbye to New Amsterdam forever.
At the beginning of season 3, the character made his last appearance in the medical series. In the first two episodes, which were actually from the last episode of Season 2, which never aired due to Covid, Kapoor fell ill, a victim of a deadly flu epidemic.
In episode 7 of the same season, viewers learned through Iggy (Tyler Labine) that the doctor decided to retire from New Amsterdam after a battle with Covid that almost cost him his life as he had to undergo open heart surgery and a lengthy surgery. A period of rehabilitation prevented him from returning to the position of head of the neurosurgery department.
So we have to believe that the screenwriters chose to close the door on Anupam Kheri’s possible return in the New Amsterdam sequel.
