The 4K restoration of one of James Cameron’s best films was one of the most stubborn sea snakes of recent years! Everyone was talking about it, but no one had seen it.
This time it’s good, Abyss is indeed coming back to cinema with a brand new version directed by the maestro James Cameron himself. However, this currently only applies to the US.
The director, who almost died on the set before he saved his fist, confirmed the information in a short video posted on social media. “My first movie about the oceans on the big screen. And with big surprises that weren’t there in the original version”Avatar director promises.

Indeed, Cameron is re-releasing Abyss in the US on December 6th in its restored 4K version for one evening only! A trailer has been revealed to mark the occasion, and the renders (see below) are breathtaking.
Last September, the filmmaker confirmed that this release was in production and that it would be released on Blu-ray. At this time, we don’t know if it will be offered in a physical version after the re-release in the US.
When contacted, Disney France indicated that it has no plans to return the film to French cinemas. There are no plans for a Blu-ray or Disney+ release at this time either.
However, it can be reasonably assumed that this will happen in 2024, as fan expectations are high on this topic. In addition, James Cameron spent a lot of time restoring the gap so that it could be used only for one evening in the USA.
You should also know that the movie has never had an HD version in our region. There’s only one DVD release that doesn’t do justice to one of James Cameron’s greatest works. In addition to the trailer, a new poster was also released to mark the occasion.

Released in theaters in 1989, Abyss was a dismal failure for the director. It only grossed $90 million worldwide against a $70 million budget. However, the work was one of the most ambitious of the time, pioneering digital effects.
To recall, Abyss features a US Navy commando who descends on the DeepCore underwater drilling station to rescue a submarine that has sunk into the depths. Bud Brigman’s (Ed Harris) team welcomes these newcomers, as does Lindsay, Bud’s soon-to-be ex-wife (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio).
When salvage operations begin around the wrecked submarine, the DeepCore crew must deal with unexplained events. If they were not alone, in the abyss?
